In what way was your DPhil important to your employer?

I am currently a Lecturer in Applied Mathematics at the Universtiy of Melbourne, a PhD in related subject is essential for my job.

In what ways have the skills and knowledge from your DPhil been useful in your current role?

I lecture courses that are closely related to the courses taught at the DTC and related to my DPhil research.

My research is in Multicellular Systems Biology and the biological knowledge from the DTC has been a massive help in building new collaborations with experimentalists.

What do you think has been of most value to you in undertaking a DPhil at Oxford?

I wouldn't have current job without it. Also the skills and networks I devloped in my DPhil (especialy due to the DTC) have been massively beneficial.

How do you think you benefited from being part of a cohort?

The main benefit is a large network of researchers who are all over the world (3 continents from my year of the DTC alone). This is true both academically and socially.

What would you say to someone who was considering doing a DPhil at the DTC?

While it may seem beneficial to bypass the taught year and get straight into research, however, the value added form the courses, which WILL fill in gaps in your knowledge you didn’t know you had and expose you to whole new areas, and developing a cohort is well worth the time invested. Also being able to undertake research projects before deciding 100% on your research topic allows you tom be sure you’re doing the right thing.

Do you have any fond memories about the DTC to share?

Having the privilege of being both a student and an employee of the DTC I have many fond memories. Some of which are...

I’m sure I was tied to the railings on the first day and yes there is a photo of this somewhere

Holidays of a lifetime… Something involving pepper…

DTC Christmas Dinners (I went to nearly 10 of them!)

A Nameless student passing out when Dave Showed a video of open heart surgery!
